Sam turned to Kim and suggested she have a seat in the waiting area. As she did so, Garza followed Sam to the door and through it, and then into the conference room. They had just taken chairs at the big table when Davidson stepped inside and identified himself.

“Charles Davidson,” he said, holding out a hand to each of them. “Can I ask what this is all about? Millie said something about poison on the money?”

Between the two of them, Sam and Garza caught him up to speed. “Naturally, since your company handles the money when it first comes into the state of Florida, we need to begin here. Can you tell me the procedure for delivering money to the banks?”

Davidson chewed the inside of his cheek for a couple of seconds before he spoke. “Okay, that is highly secure information, but under the circumstances, I’m going to take a chance. I would like to verify your identities before I answer, though. Any objection?”

“Not at all,” Sam said. He and Garza produced their IDs once again, and Davidson took a cell phone out of his pocket and dialed a number from memory.

“Chief Olson? Charles Davidson, Preemptive Security. I have a couple of men here asking questions, and I’d like to confirm that they are working with the police. Their names are…” He cut off suddenly and glanced up at the two of them again. “Yes, sir, that is them. I will give them every possible cooperation. Yes, sir, and thank you.”

He ended the call and laid the phone on the table. “So, you’re that Sam Prichard,” he said. “Under other circumstances, I would love to pick your brain, but I don’t think we have time for that today.” He cleared his throat. “The procedure is pretty simple. We have two trucks that run back and forth between here and Atlanta. Every night, they pick up close to a billion dollars in new currency and bring it back here for distribution. We have a secure facility on the outskirts of Orlando where that money is separated and reloaded onto smaller trucks that deliver to the banks and other financial institutions. When they deliver, they also pick up used bills that are nearing the end of their life cycle, and those are transported back to the Federal Reserve for destruction.”

“All right,” Sam said. “We need to get lab technicians into that facility, to start testing the money. I don’t really think we’re going to find that it’s already tainted, but we have to rule it out.”

Davidson sucked on his cheek for a second. “Okay,” he said. “What I need you to do is have your lab technicians meet us out at the guard shack there, because they won’t be allowed in without my approval. How soon can we make this happen?”

Garza took out his phone and called the local crime lab, who said they had no one who could perform the tasks necessary. He ended that call while Sam called Doctor Dione at the hospital.
